回到90年代前期，自己是先在Spin聽到Saint Etienne翻唱Neil Young作品〈Only Love Can Break Your Heart〉而愛上，當時他們也已經是不少英倫獨立樂迷十分心儀的名字，更是90年代英國獨立樂壇的重要名字之一。女主唱Sarah Cracknell的輕柔甜美嗓音，演繹起Bob Stanley（前Melody Maker樂評人）與Pete Wiggs兩人筆下那彷彿源自60年代英倫流行曲的美妙長青旋律是如斯觸動心靈，同時更還能將屬於post-acid house的跳舞音樂節奏共冶一爐，在90年代初葉indie-dance紀元裡建立起獨樹一幟的音樂美學。

第二張經典專輯《So Tough》不僅為他們締造英國金榜top 7的最高商業成就並帶來〈You're In A Bad Way〉、〈Hobart Paving〉等大熱單曲，更重要的是專輯製作上揉合60s girl pop、Indie Pop、indie dance、dream pop、trip hop等元素之餘還展現了取樣手法的獨特思維——除了在音樂上取樣了Rush、Beastie Boys、Incredible Bongo Band、Depeche Mode 等經典名字，還透過一些電影、電視對白的取樣穿插，讓整個聆聽感覺憑添生活感。

說到生活感，值得一提的是專輯中一曲〈Mario's Cafe〉日後更延伸出一張由三人共同挑選曲目而構成的《Saint Etienne Present Songs For Mario's Cafe》合輯，收錄Donovan、The Kinks、King Tubby等懷舊名字的歌曲。
