Britpop年代裡指標樂團之一，The Verve於 1995 年發行了這張第二張專輯《A Northern Soul》——命名源自70年代英國northern soul音樂風潮，也呼應Richard Ashcroft 對情感與靈性追尋的主題。。

被主唱 Richard Ashcroft描述為圍繞著一個人經歷的各種情感所誕生的《A Northern Soul》，以更為鮮明甚至宏大的neo-psychedelia與space rock風格取代了首張專輯《A Storm in Heaven》中的shoegaze色彩，但Richard Ashcroft的演唱卻又更為原始真誠、甚至有些痛苦，使得情緒張力更形深鑿。

〈On Your Own〉是自己大愛的歌曲，透過一種黯然的、卻又幾近自嘲的口吻，把孤獨、失落和自我放逐唱得很迷人，也充滿了尋找自我意義的探索。。
